SHARK binders

I have seen so many great posts of teachers succesfully teaching even the littlest students how to be organized.  It got me thinking...  could I do this?  Organization is definitely a learned skill, so why not teach it?  I think too often, kids are expected by 3rd or 4th grade to be organized.  Unfortunately, no one ever took the time to TEACH them how!

So this year, my partner and I have decided to use a binder with our little firsties.  In it, they have:
  1. A homework planner - this is such a great tool.  It's provided by our school, and every grade uses them.  They take a lot of extra learning in the beginning of the year, because they don't use them in kindergarten.  But it really puts the responsibility of completing homework in the student's hands (where it should be).  It is three hole-punched, making it super easy to pop into the binder.
  2. A spiral notebook - this is where the kids do ALL of their spelling homework.  Solves the problem of "I did it and lost the paper," or my favorite: "I couldn't do spelling homework because I don't have any paper at home."  Again, its a learning curve working with this, but I think it's going to cut down on missed recesses because of not having spelling homework.
  3. A reading log - in its own special little see-though folder.
  4. A fluency log - the kids do reading fluency every night for homework.  This is where they keep their story and their recording sheet for how they are doing.
  5. A behavior log - each night they color in what color they stayed on for the day.  This is a great way for our parents to see how their cherubs are doing behavior-wise at school each day.
Pictures to follow!
